周勤如(1947-),音乐哲学博士,旅美中国作曲家、音乐理论家。早期专业音乐教育在中国音乐学院附中完成,1969年任北京京剧院二团指挥作曲。1978年回中央音乐学院作曲系学习,1983年毕业留校教曲式与作品分析。1986年获奖学金赴美加大洛杉矶分校(UCLA)攻读学位,凡十载,作曲理论为主,兼修西方音乐技术理论史和民族音乐学。1996年获博士学位后,旋即息止音乐创作和个人职业追求,在美国全力创办、译编、出版以译介中国音乐文献为主的英文学报《音乐中国》。中央音乐学院学报特约编委(2000-),中国音乐评论学会名誉理事(2006-)。
主要学术贡献:提出“音乐分析学”概念和“音乐分析的三维方向”理论(音乐研究86/4,14/1);推动国内音乐学术的科学化、规范化和提倡“看透世界、发展自己”的学术建设理念(黄钟97/4, 99/2, 00/1;中央音乐学院学报99/3, 00/4;人民音乐89/4-5, 95/9, 01/3;星海音乐学院学报05/1, 06/1;音乐研究09/3, 11/6);推动汉英音乐文论翻译的建设(人民音乐00/2;中央音乐学院学报13/3);提出一元化的两仪五度相生音阶体系理论(中央音乐学院学报14/1,将三篇连载)。
主要音乐创作:交响组曲《瑶山风情》(83,姚关荣/新影乐团);《将仲子—为女高音与筝而作》(84,中国唱片社委约,邓桂平/李萌,《音乐创作》85/3);《民歌主题管弦乐小品4首》(85,香港宝丽金委约,韩中杰/中央乐团,Philips中国首套CD);室内歌剧《射日》(91,硕士论文,美国作曲编曲家协会年度奖);《诗经歌曲二首》(94,纽约长风乐团首演);琵琶古筝二重奏《古韵三叠》(95,吴蛮/杨艺伦敦首演,Nimbus CD);民族室内乐《行云》(96,纽约州艺委会委约,纽约长风乐团首演);《交响叙事曲》(96,博士论文创作部分,获美国作曲家交响乐队视奏奖)。
ZHOU Qinru (b. 1947), Ph.D in Music, Chinese composer and music theorist currently living in the USA. After finishing his early professional education at the Attached School of China Conservatory of Music, he was assigned as a conductor and composer in 1969 with the Troupe II of Beijing Jingju Theater. In 1978, he returned back to the Central Conservatory of Music to continue his study at the Department of Composition and, five years later, was engaged by the same college to teach musical forms and analysis after his graduation. In 1986, he went to UCLA with a fellowship to begin his ten-year graduate study, not only majoring in composition and theory but also spending vast time to study the history of Western musical theories and ethnomusicology. This enabled him toinitiate and carry on the mission of the Journal of Music in China in Americaimmediately after he finished his Ph.D. program.
Zhou’s major academic contributions include 2 papers on the new concept of music analytics and the three dimensions of music analysis (Yinyue Yanjiu/ Music Study1986/4; 2014/1), 12 papers for promoting the scientific and standardized approach of music research as well as the way to understand the world well and to develop self effectively (Huangzhong 1997/4, 1999/2, 2000/1;Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music 1999/3, 2000/4; Renmin Yinyue/People’s Music1989/4-5, 1995/9, 2001/3; Journal of Xinghai Music Conservatory 2005/1, 2006/1;Yinyue Yanjiu/Music Research 2009/3, 2011/6), 2 papers on the establishment of Chinese-English translation of Chinese music literature (Renmin Yinyue/People’s Music 2000/2; Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music 2013/3), and 3 papers in series on the scales of Two-winged Circle-of-fifths in Chinese folk and traditional music (Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music 2014/1 and 2, forthcoming in 2014/3).
Major musical works by Zhou include symphonic suite Yaoshan Fengqing/Expressions of the Yao Mountains (1983, premiered by the Orchestra of Central Documentary Studio), Qiang Zhong Zi for soprano and zheng (1984, China Records commissioned), Four pieces for orchestra with the theme from Chinese folksongs (1985, Philips-PolyGram commissioned for the first set of Chinese CD), chamber opera Shooting the Suns (1991, master’s thesis, awarded by the American Society for Musical Composers and Arrangers), Two Songs after the Book of Songsfor soprano and zheng (1994, premiered by the Music from China ensemble in New York); Gu Yun San Die/Three Verses from an Old Poem, duet for pipa and zheng(1995, premiered in London, Nimbus CD); Chinese chamber music Xing Yun/Flying Clouds (1996, commissioned by the New York State Council on the Arts, premiered by Music from China ensemble in New York), Symphonic Ballad (1996, part of Ph.D. dissertation, awarded and read by American Composer’s Orchestra in New York).
