  剧情简介

  杰瑞和好友的妻子艾玛已经保持了长达七年的婚外恋情,而他却不知道好友罗伯特其实早已发现他们的奸情。本剧剧情以倒叙的方式展开,始于最后偷情者的分手,结束于最初两人的出轨。时光倒流的九幕戏,每一幕都是前一幕戏的注脚,也是延展。品特认为,两性关系、人际关系给人们带来了焦虑、痛苦,以及威胁,而背叛只是面对威胁的软弱和妥协,更是对于自身欲望的委曲求全。剧中三个角色的友谊、爱情和婚姻,都被锁闭在了这根关于背叛的链条里,挣扎、扭曲。

  导演的话

  《背叛》是一出关于失败的爱的戏剧。借用某位评论家的话来说,《背叛》写得是情人和旧情人、互相欺骗的挚友和夫妻。它也描述了“信息的力量、对孤独的恐惧、和自恋的爱。” 品特微妙地运用倒叙的戏剧结构将爱和友谊分崩离析的过程在我们面前进行了回放。

  在《背叛》中,无法放弃对真爱的追求者从一开始就是所谓的 “背德者”。爱和欲望注定面向毁灭,真真假假的记忆也在破碎、垮塌、最终毁灭。在剧终,当看到那场所谓的爱情初始,我们究竟会为这场背叛唏嘘不已还是仍然感叹爱的来临?

  品特的《背叛》也是一出关于时间的戏剧。时间不仅仅依靠行动和言语而定义,也展现在停顿、沉默和时空裂缝中。其实我们早就知道,关于爱的滋生和枯萎无非就发生在那些暧昧的时间中。通过《背叛》,我们似乎有机会在观剧中跑到时间前面,提前获悉故事结局。然而我们只有跟随着这九场戏的戏剧时间回到过去,才能衡量埋葬任何一种感情所需的精力和结果。

  Betrayal is about failed love. Borrowing Linda Well’s words, this is a play “about lovers and former lovers, best friends who cuckold each other, husbands who deceive wives, and wives who deceive husbands. It is also about the power of knowledge, the fear of autonomy, and the narcissism of love.”i By using the temporal reversal of the events in the dramatic narrative, Pinter subtly documents and unfolds the stories of the now-dead love and friendship.

  In Betrayal, the characters who could not and would not give up love are destined to be the so-called “immoralists”. Their love and desire are therefore destined for destruction, true or false memories shattering and collapsing into dust. At the end of the play, when finally witnessing the inception of the love affair between Emma and Jerry, will we cling onto our bitterness and cynicism about betrayal, or somehow feel invaded and possessed by the feeling of love?

  Pinter’s Betrayal is also a play about time. Time is not only defined by actions and speeches here, but also (if not rather) by excruciating pauses, silences, and temporal-spatial gaps. Well, we surely know the ways in which love bursts and withers away during the time of intimacy. In this play, we, as audience, may get a chance to “jump ahead” to the end of the story. However, we, as ourselves, can only measure the emotional labor and its consequences of burying any kind of affection by following the “exhausting” dramatic time through the nine scenes of the play.

  哈罗德•品特1930年出生在伦敦一个犹太裁缝家庭,在反犹主义思潮的影响下,走上戏剧之路。品特的作品新颖精炼,形式多样,有独幕和多幕舞台剧,也有电视剧和广播剧。主要作品有:《房屋》(1957)、《送菜升降机》(1957)、《生日晚会》(1958)、《看管人》(1960,作为最佳剧本赢得晚会标准戏剧奖和纽约报纸同业公会的专栏奖)、《侏儒》(1961)、《搜集证据》(1962)、《茶会》(1965)、《回家》(1965,1967年获百老汇剧评家奖)、《昔日》(1971)和《虚无乡》(1975)等。

  除了撰写舞台剧剧本,品特还为广播剧、电影和电视剧撰写过剧本,也是导演和演员,获得过两次奥斯卡获提名和七次英国电影学院奖提名。2005年,他获得了诺贝尔文学奖。

  品特的语言技巧、冷峻的解剖风格影响了整整一代英国戏剧家。诺贝尔文学奖对他的评价是“他改变了20世纪戏剧舞台的面貌”。这位戏剧先锋同时又是崇尚人权和反战的作家,生命的最后几年一直致力于此。
