The Story of Wuzhen Theatre Festival
In 2003, Huang Lei directed and performed in a TV series, Lost Time, which was shot in Wuzhen, a dreamy southern Chinese water town with 1300 years of history. It was then that he met and formed a deep friendship with Chen Xianghong of Culture Wuzhen. In 2010, together with director Stan Lai, they made a simple wish: to organize a theatre festival in Wuzhen. The township’s government gave unflagging support to the initiative by commissioning renowned Taiwanese architect, Kris Yao, to design its Grand Theatre. Stan Lai was also called on to direct the reconstruction of existing theatrical spaces in Wuzhen, along with the renovation and design of several old warehouses which eventually became small theatres, each with its unique characteristics. Almost all at once, there were six venues for professional performances in the scenic Xizha tourist district. The addition of director Meng Jinghui lent considerable prestige to the Festival.
No one knew what would become of Wuzhen, a scenic tourist town, as it underwent such a cultural renewal. The newly-formed Organizing Committee could only work hard and take one step at a time. It was beyond the Committee’s wildest dreams to see that “Wuzhen plus theatre” had such great attraction as to make the Inaugural Wuzhen Theatre Festival a major cultural phenomenon. It was a cultural feast that no one wanted to miss.
The 2013 Inaugural Wuzhen Theatre Festival kicked off on May 9, 2013, in the beautiful new Wuzhen Grand Theatre, with a performance of Stan Lai's monumental 8 hour epicA Dream Like a Dream. For 11 days and nights, rapturous audiences were treated to 7 theatre venues, 6 specially invited plays, 12 plays of the Youth Competition, over 120 teams of artists who put up over 580 performances in the Ancient Town Carnival, 15 Masters' Dialogues, Forums, and Workshops by masters of the world’s theatre. In all, 17,580 audience members, as well as 183,000 tourists and local people, took part in the inaugural Festival, with 139 members of the media covering this event that brought together more than 200 artists, scholars and celebrities from countries all around the world. To see great theatre in special historic venues within the old town is the unique spell that the Wuzhen Festival casts on all its audience. In the words of the Inaugural Festival's Honorary Chairman Robert Brustein, writing in theNew York Review, “Wuzhen has ambitions to become a major international theatrical event like Avignon or Edinburgh, and, judging from its first season, it will almost certainly realize them.”
World class theatre in a world class tourist destination. Theatre in old riverside warehouses and ancient plazas. The charm of the old and the shock of the new. These are the delights of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival.
