Maurizio Sciarra (Bari, 1955) was an assistant director for many years, working with Luigi Comencini for over a decade. In 1997 he made his first feature film, The Room of the Scirocco, which won awards at a number of festivals, including Annecy, and in 2001 his second feature, Off to the Revolution in a 2CV, won the Golden Leopard and three other prizes at Locarno. He returned to Locarno in 2006 with his film The Kreutzer Sonata: What is Love?, based on the Tolstoy novella. After being seen by record audiences at Locarno, the film made the rounds of other festivals such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Mons and Rabat.
Sciarra has also made several documentaries, including Chi ruba donne (2001), Coppi e la Dama Bianca: un amore controcorrente (2004), and In viaggio con I pupi (2008). He served on the board of the Istituto Luce from 2006 to 2008.
